🤝 Brothers from the Hood — Boys Development & Mentorship Programme

Fundraising goal: R35 000

R35,000 covers the full programme from June through December 2026 — the pilot session and every monthly session that follows, for the same 15 young men.

For many young men growing up in Hanover Park, the road ahead is shaped by circumstances they didn't choose — gang pressure, absent role models, and a community stretched thin. Brothers from the Hood exists to offer a different path: brotherhood, mentorship, and the belief that where you come from doesn't have to determine where you're going.

Brothers from the Hood (Young Brotherhood) is a collaboration between the Dr Phil-afel Foundation and Embodied Brotherhood, supporting 15 young men from Hanover Park through structured mentorship and brotherhood.

The Dr Phil-afel Foundation manages the programme's nonprofit administration — documentation, coordination and funding — while Embodied Brotherhood facilitates and runs the sessions, with both teams supporting fundraising.

The first session took place on 13 June 2026, with monthly sessions running through December.

About the Programme

Brothers from the Hood exists to give young men access to: safe male role models and structured mentorship · brotherhood and belonging · physical movement and healthy activity · emotional development and resilience · leadership guidance and life skills · healthy masculinity, discipline and accountability · exposure to positive role models, careers, cultures and environments that expand what they believe is possible for their lives · pathways into education, employment, entrepreneurship and meaningful work · opportunities that interrupt cycles of violence, gangsterism, isolation and hopelessness.

The programme seeks not only to support young men through positive experiences, but to accompany them on a journey towards becoming confident, compassionate, capable and purpose-driven men who, in turn, uplift others.

Led by men's work facilitator and coach Rome Naidoo, together with mentors from Embodied Brotherhood, volunteers and community leaders, the programme combines mentorship, brother circles, teamwork and honest conversations around leadership, self-worth, discipline, emotional wellbeing and personal growth. Activities vary from session to session — from sport and movement to workshops and shared meals, but the core is always connection.

Future sessions will explore identity, confidence, communication, accountability, healthy masculinity and community responsibility.

The Need

The need is documented in our own community research: in interviews with 108 residents, 92% identified gang-related violence as a key concern, 85% identified the need for after-school programmes, and 68% reported at least one unemployed adult in the household.

A Long-Term Development Pathway

Brothers from the Hood is designed as more than a monthly activity programme. As it grows, the vision is to build a structured pathway that supports young men from adolescence into responsible adulthood — from mentorship and personal development, through to future education, employment and community leadership opportunities. This pathway is still being developed and will be shared in more detail as the programme matures.

From Chad Cupido

"The men's circle, instead of sitting and only talking to each other, will now assist with helping the boys. And I think that is full circle."
